چکیده

Countering claims that recency effects observed at different time scales arise from a common forgetting process, Davelaar et al. (2005) presented a number of experimental dissociations between shortand long-term recency. They used these dissociations to argue that separate mechanisms underlie shortand long-term recency. Here we show that the temporal context model (TCM), which assumes that both shortand long-term recency arise from the same contextual drift process, can account for the major recency dissociations at different time scales. Our version of TCM, which includes the Usher and McClelland (2001) leaky-accumulator model as a retrieval rule, captures the dynamics of immediate, delayed, and continual distractor free recall, and shows that dissociations between shortand long-term recency naturally arise from a model that uses an internal contextual state as the sole cue for retrieval across time scales.

A context-based theory of recency and contiguity in free recall.

The authors present a new model of free recall on the basis of M. W. Howard and M. J. Kahana's temporal context model and M. Usher and J. L. McClelland's leaky-accumulator decision model. In this model, contextual drift gives rise to both short-term and long-term recency effects, and contextual retrieval gives rise to short-term and long-term contiguity effects. Recall decisions are controlled ...

A context-sensitive dynamic role-based access control model for pervasive computing environments

Resources and services are accessible in pervasive computing environments from anywhere and at any time. Also, due to ever-changing nature of such environments, the identity of users is unknown. However, users must be able to access the required resources based on their contexts. These and other similar complexities necessitate dynamic and context-aware access control models for such environmen...

Aiming Higher: Advancing Public Social Insurance for Long-term Care to Meet the Global Aging Challenge; Comment on “Financing Long-term Care: Lessons From Japan”

Globally, aging populations are driving the demand for long-term care (LTC) services for a growing number of older people with disabilities or chronic illnesses. A key challenge for policy-makers in all countries is to find a comprehensive solution to financing LTC services to make them widely accessible, affordable, and equitable for all in need. In this commentary, we...

Putting Short-Term Memory Into Context: Reply to Usher, Davelaar, Haarmann, and Goshen-Gottstein (2008).

The temporal context model posits that search through episodic memory is driven by associations between the multiattribute representations of items and context. Context, in turn, is a recency weighted sum of previous experiences or memories. Because recently processed items are most similar to the current representation of context, M. Usher, E. J. Davelaar, H. J. Haarmann, and Y. Goshen-Gottste...

The demise of short-term memory revisited: empirical and computational investigations of recency effects.

In the single-store model of memory, the enhanced recall for the last items in a free-recall task (i.e., the recency effect) is understood to reflect a general property of memory rather than a separate short-term store. This interpretation is supported by the finding of a long-term recency effect under conditions that eliminate the contribution from the short-term store. In this article, eviden...
